on my commute home today, I saw a busted-ass Tiburon in rattlecan black with tacked-on plastic wheel flares, and I got to thinking: what ever happened to the Tiburon’s predecessor, the Scoupe? i can’t remember the last time i saw one on the road. does anybody know of one that’s still running?

Did they even sell these in the US?

I’ve never heard of this, but I think it’s a pretty stylish little thing. It’s almost like a mini Prelude.

that looks shocking like a toyota paseo.

I’ve literally never heard of it, as far as I know.
Anyway, Wikipedia says it was sold in the US from 1988 to 1995. Huh.

I always mixed these up with the Storm/Impulse/Paseo crowd...

A brief internet trawl says it was penned by Italdesign, which explains the handsome looks. Wikipedia seems to say it’s actually a pretty interesting car too - Lotus-tuned suspension and even a Turbo model with 115hp. Apparently the first application of the Garrett T15 turbo.

Yeah, I remember these. There were never many, and when’s the last time you saw an Excel?

Scoupes were somewhat popular in my high school parking lot. More popular than Mazda MX-3s or Nissan Pulsars at least.
I suspect they have all rusted away by now, even in Georgia. Hyundai wasn’t building the most durable cars in the early 90s.

I suspect you are in your very late 20's/early 30's? because my high school parking lot looked exactly the same.

I saw a ratty one here in L.A. not too long ago and it made me go, “oh yeah. Those things.” How about the Chevy Spectrum? That’s another one that dropped off the face of the Earth.

regular college students in the mid 90s look more extremely hipster by today’s standards.

I actually specifically remember a pretty good commercial for them. We were watching TV in my girlfriend’s dorm room around 1989-1990, and this ad comes on for a neat-looking little sporty car. They talk about all its features and show it from dramatic angles without mentioning the manufacturer, and at the end, they say “Scoupe... by Hyundai.” A friend who was sitting there with us said “Hyundai?!?” And the damn commercial said, “Yes, Hyundai.” Funny as hell and it worked...
edit: aaaaaand here it is.

As per Citroen’s post , should we pronounce this “Scoo-pay”?

That’s one I’ve never heard of. Is it an Isuzu? sure doesn’t look like a Chevy to me.

I would drive any of those.

Yeah, it was an Isuzu Gemini sold by Chevy. I think it was more common in hatchback form.
I guess it replaced the Sprint. I remember seeing a lot of them, so they sold.

You flatter me, but you are off by a decade. Most of my high school classmates weren't saving up from summer jobs to get their wheels.
